For the first time in its long history, one of DeKalb’s busiest bridges is getting a major safety improvement to improve driver safety thanks to the Stone Mountain CID.

Crews from CID contractors R.J. Haynie & Associates and Massana Construction have started modifying the bridge to later install light poles and attach LED lights and light assemblies. Contractors will begin installing the poles in about 45 days, eventually adding overhead LED lights to better illuminate the deck of the Mountain Industrial Boulevard bridge over Highway 78. The brighter lights will enhance visibility to improve driving conditions and safety for anyone crossing the bridge after sundown.

In total, 10 light posts will be added on the bridge and immediately adjacent ramp areas. Crews will extend existing bridge beams to accommodate the addition of light poles, allowing the new lights to shine on the lanes. The poles will be black and approximately 25 feet high, and the entire project is expected to be complete within 2 months, weather permitting.

Construction funding is supplied by a grant from the State Road and Tollway Authority’s Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank. The CID is funding the project design and inspection costs. The bridge work is taking place from positions on Highway 78, which will prevent interruptions to travel on Mountain Industrial Boulevard. However, there will be periodic lane closures along Highway 78.
