Traffic-choked intersections are often the result of traffic signals failing to move vehicle traffic through them efficiently. One poorly-timed traffic signal can cause backups in two directions along a busy route, and impede traffic flow for miles.

The Stone Mountain CID is a strong advocate for signal timing optimization, which includes traffic counting and planning to maximize traffic through-flow at each intersection. The CID is working with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and DeKalb County traffic engineers to promote a regional signal program that enhances trip times across County travel corridors, making it easier for drivers to reach Highway 78, Interstate 85 and all points between.

GDOT consultants will collect and evaluate intersection data, then collaborate with local transportation experts and complete plans to keep drivers moving throughout the Incredible Corridor. The initial planning work should be completed prior to this fall.
