A proposed redevelopment of 88 acres at the corner of Hugh Howell Road and Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Tucker required changing the Comprehensive Land Use Plan in order to accommodate the developers’ request for high density low-cost apartments failed to win approval from Tucker’s City Council on August 30.

Before a packed chamber in the City Hall annex, and a standing-room-only crowd in the overflow area, Mayor Frank Auman and the council questioned developer Stephen MacCauley and his attorney Doug Dillard for four and a-half hours, before voting 5-2 in favor of keeping the land use plan intact. Mayor Auman and Councilmember Bill Rosenfeld were the only votes in favor of changing the plan.

Other council members expressed concerns over insufficient parking as well as the need for on-site storage of raw sewage until DeKalb County could fully address its sewer capacity issues.

While ‘The Rise’ is dead, MaCauley Investments could still develop many of the components other than the low-cost apartments, including a daycare center, restaurants, parks, retail, office, and the post production facility for film and television that had been originally proposed.
