New Business

Old Sear Property Purchased by Crespac

Crespac, a recycling, package and design resource center, purchased 55 acres of the old Sears property on Hugh Howell Road. The existing warehouse space will be repurposed for manufacturing and distribution. The company is able to offer its customers the best economics and lead times on challenging, environmentally-friendly packaging applications with its in-house product design, prototyping and tool-manufacturing capabilities.

The property’s remaining 22 acres are currently under contract and undergoing a rezoning process with the City of Tucker for retail development.

New Smoke Rise Elementary School to Open Fall 2020

Smoke Rise Elementary School will be moving from 1991 Silver Hill Road in Stone Mountain to Hugh Howell Road and Flintstone Drive for the 2020 school year. The DeKalb County Board of Education approved the 12.41-acre purchase of the former Sears property in 2017. DeKalb County voters approved the reconstruction of the school in 2011, but in 2015 it was determined that the septic system could not be replaced at the existing site

Construction for the new school began in 2018 and will be completed in time for the first day of school next fall.

Underpriced Furniture Breaks Ground

Please join us on Thursday, August 29, at 12:30 p.m. for the groundbreaking of Underpriced Furniture’s new distribution center located at the intersection of Sarr Parkway and Mountain Industrial Boulevard.

“This has been an effort of tremendous undertaking,” said TSCID Executive Director Emory Morsberger, “Mike Hall and I have been diligently working with the City of Tucker and DeKalb County water and sewer to get this construction underway.”

There will be a light lunch and refreshments served at the event. Please RSVP by August 26 by calling 404-659-0919 or emailing camden@newaboa.com.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Holds Simulation in Blackstone (formerly Ackerman) Property

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta made use of 1578 Litton Drive, a Blackstone Group property recently purchased from Ackerman & Co.
To learn more about the Alliance and to follow the progress of Team Reboot’s efforts, please visit IFA’s website.

Hospitals and physicians benefit from simulations where medical professionals test out state-of-the-art equipment to ensure expert care is used when treating actual patients. Simulations often use interactive medical mannequins, which are life-size anatomical models programmed and controlled by a computer, for doctors and nurses to refine their knowledge and hone their practical skills.

Tucker Summit CID is proud to provide a location for medical professionals to prepare for real-life emergency scenarios and everyday practice.

Amazon Building a Fulfillment Facility in DeKalb/Gwinnett

Even though Atlanta will not be home to Amazon’s second North American headquarters, the CID will still benefit from the online retail giant’s fulfillment expansion on the DeKalb/Gwinnett County border. The 700,000 square foot facility, to be located just north of Stone Mountain Park, will be developed by Seefried Industrial Properties and will create 1,000-2,000 new jobs in the community.

Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson indicated that the state’s pro-business environment will continue to encourage major companies to expand in Georgia.

TSCID Member Input Requested for Freight Cluster Plan Study

Are you a Tucker Summit CID property owner? We want your input and assistance for the Freight Cluster Plan Study, which will study all modes of freight movement in the Tucker Summit district. The study will provide detailed insight into the area’s current and future freight activity and address transportation planning, traffic operations and related planning needs. Input will help the CID develop a list of projects which will need to be addressed based on the study’s findings and to identify recommended policy changes to address those project needs.  Please contact Emory Morsberger at emory@tuckersummitcid.com to participate.

What’s New with Team Reboot

The students of the TSCID-sponsored competitive robotics team,  FRC Team Reboot, began working on their first PowerWheel, a powered wheelchair for children with disabilities, for their partnership with Interact FIRST Alliance. Reboot is looking forward to adding new students from DATE Academy to the team this school year and help with these projects and FIRST Robotics Competitions. Keep up the good work!

Team Reboot is still looking for a new space in which to meet and build after August 31. If you know of a location where these young minds can continue to learn and grow, please contact Deneise Turner at dturner@81029@att.net.

Georgia Manufacturing Alliance Visits District Packaging Plant

One of TSCID’s manufacturing rock stars recently had another spotlight on its great work. Thermo Pac, located at 1609 Stone Ridge Drive, is a food processing and packaging plant that was on the recent Tucker Manufacturing Day tour in April 2019. The Georgia Manufacturing Alliance (GMA) also recently toured the facility as part of the “Buy From Georgia Month” campaign, which focuses on retail products that the public may not know are made in Georgia.

Thermo Pac makes nutritional, ready-to-eat meals with a sustainable shelf life. Read more about the GMA visit and “Buy From Georgia” campaign in this Atlanta Journal-Constitution article.
